The Catholic Church's View
Laudato Si
Written by Pope Francis I
Pope Francis I wrote the Encyclical, Laudato Si, which addresses the need to care for creation and addresses the problems we are encountering in our world because of modern day advances. Such advances have resulted an increase in pollution and a decrease in the amount of time children and adults spend outdoors appreciating the beauty of the nature God has given us. In this encyclical, he does address genetically modified organisms. The Catholic Church sees GMOs as a scientific opportunity and sees them as no different than crossbreeding and past techniques used for research and experimentation. However, it notices generalizations and assumptions as precautions taken in order to protect the common good of all people. So if we remain patient, we may start to recognize the ethical pros and cons of the situation, and as Pope Francis suggests, "shed a new light on the problem." This means we should not be so quick to criticize the use of GMOs until scientific studies, research, and proof give us reasons to worry about their use.
