Who is Monsanto and what do they do?
Monsanto is one of the largest agricultural corporations in the world. Their mission is to make more with less and to assist farmers in efficiently producing foods from seeds in order to conserve natural resources, allow crops to withstand pesticides/herbicides, and spend less money on crops. They do so by altering the genes that are already in the seeds and inserting microbes; this alteration forms the seeds and the seed produces a genetically modified organism. The microorganisms can do a variety of different, beneficial things, like help the plant to withstand different types of weather, naturally assist them in fighting off pests and diseases, and more. On the flip side, these microbes can cause infection, harm the environment, or indirectly affect plant health.
On Monsanto's website is a list of good intentions and goals for their company, however their work comes with criticism and many risks. They have taken into account the accusations and assumptions made against genetically modified foods and crops; they have hundreds of employees that are responsible for starting research experiments investigating whatever is being questioned.
Monsanto is trusting that their GMOs are safe; they believe strongly in their work and believe nothing has been proven to be wrong with biotechnology and genetic engineering. Genetic modification (the basis of Monsanto's company) is a new and developing scientific topic that should be researched and tested, but Monsanto must take precautions while remaining confident in the work they perform.
