How to Determine What Foods Contain GMOs?
|
It may be difficult for someone to identify if a particular food product contains genetically modified organisms, but GMOs make up over 70% of the food supply in the United States which makes it easier to determine. Organic foods that are stamped by the USDA are prohibited from containing genetically altered materials; organic foods contain more nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and have little to no pesticide utilization. Additives usually contain the most common genetically modified ingredients (corn, canola, soy). If you see these additives, corn syrup, oils, sugars, etc., then it is more than likely that this food contains GMOs. Obviously, foods with the Non-GMO Project verification seal aren't genetically altered, however there are foods that are GMO free but aren't printed with that seal on them.
