Infertility in Women
When assessing infertility, there are no direct effects on the reproductive system itself. However, according to many medical professionals GMOs could indirectly affect reproductive abilities by "influencing endocrine metabolism, or endometriosis." In a woman's endocrine system, many organs produce specific hormones; the ovaries satisfy a woman's ability to create and maintain a healthy fetus. The ovaries are responsible for producing multiple hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for the development and maintenance of a female's reproductive organs, and progesterone is the hormone responsible for preparing the uterus for conception and pregnancy each month during the menstrual cycle. These hormones are essential for a viable pregnancy. More research needs to be conducted in order to support the hypothesis that the consumption of GMOs has an indirect effect on the reproductive system. However, if enough evidence is found to support this, it is safe to say this could be true.
